LETTER FROM THE AUTHOR OF STORM –  KEVIN CROSSLEY HOLLAND

_45667885_kevin_crossholland_512

storm inside  storm

Greetings  –  and very many thanks for sending the excellent questions put to me by Year 3.  I’ve done my best to reply to them.

I hope that one day some of your children will get to see the north Norfolk coast.  It’s still quite wild (and windy), with the saltmarsh dividing the farming acres and little villages from the North Sea.  Last night, there were far more stars in the sky than I could begin to count and I could hear the sea, two miles away, sort-of snoring!

Your children might be interested in reading my book Waterslain Angels in which they’ll meet Annie again, now three years older, and meet little Storm as well.  Suitable for 9 and up, I’d say.

Merry Christmas, and all good wishes,

Kevin Crossley-Holland

Jaqwan – “Why did you end the story with Annie going to Dr Grant’s house? Why did you not end the story with Annie going back to Willa?”

I thought that readers would understand that, once Annie had reached the doctor’s house, Dr Grant would go to the Carter’s house, and make sure that Willa and her baby were all right.

Jiya – “How did you become an author?”

When I was eighteen, I began to write stories and poems.  I managed to print a few in my university magazine, but five years passed before a publisher accepted my first novel for children.  So then:  start writing earlier than I did.  Be patient.  and read, read, read.  See how published writers construct their stories, and listen to how they write.

Sami – “Why is the man called Storm?”

It’s a rather threatening name!  I didn’t want Annie to have too easy a ride  –  I wanted it to feel risky.

Afrah – “What happens next?”

I don’t know.

Ishaq – “Why did Storm disappear?”

He was a ghost.

Roberta – ” Why did you want a storm to appear in your book?”

A wild night made Annie’s journey more difficult.

Hussain – “Why did you make the horseman the ghost?”

Well, what I imagined was that the horseman was the ghost of the man killed in the ford.

Mahi – “How did Annie get home?”

I suppose Dr Grant drove her back in his car.

Husna – “Where did the horseman go?”

I don’t know.  Into thin air.  Elsewhere.

Bhakti – “Why did the horseman leave Annie at Dr Grant’s?”

He was taking her to where she needed to go.

Ioana – “What will happen to Willa?”

I’d like to think she had her baby safely, and they were both fine.

David – “Why did you make Storm a friendly ghost?”

Why not?

We were learning about poems from

Roger  McGough and this is one of them.

The writer of this poem

The writer of this poem

Is taller than a tree

As keen as north wind

As handsome as can be

As bold as a boxing glove

As sharp as a nib

As strong as scaffolding

As tricky as fib

As smooth as an ice cream

As quick  as a lick

As clean as a chemist shop

As clever as a tick

The writer of this poem

Never ceases to amaze

He’s one in a million billion

(or so the poem says!)

In Literacy 3GT have been learning some poems written by Roger McGough. The poems are really interesting. Here is the first poem.

Bully Night

Bully Night

I do not like

The company you keep.

The burglars and the bogeymen

Who slink while others sleep.

Bully Night

I do not like

The noises that you make

The creaking and the shrieking

That keep me

Fast awake.

Bully Night

I do not like

The loneliness you bring

The loneliness you bring.

Here is the last one.

The Fight of the Year

And there goes the bell for the third month

And Winter comes out of its corner looking groggy

Spring leads with a left of the head

Followed by a sharp right to the body

Daffodils

Primroses

Crocuses

Snowdrops

Lilacs

Violets

Pussywillow

Winter can’t take much more punishment

And Spring shows no sign of tiring

Tadpoles

Squirrels

Baalambs

Badgers

Bunny Rabbits

Mad March Hares

Horses and Hounds

Spring is merciless

Winter won’t go the full twelve rounds

Bobtail Clouds

Scallywaggy Winds

The sun

A pavement artist

In every town

A left to the chin

And Winter’s down!

Tomatoes

Radish

Cucumber

Onions

Beetroot

Celery

And any

Amount of

Lettuce

For dinner

Winter’s out for the count

Spring is the winner!

I, Ioana go to 3 groups with Mrs Lazarus: Writing, Reading and Maths. My favourites are Reading and Writing. In Reading, we read Charlotte’s Web by E.B White. In Writing we find out how to be a good writer.

Red Nose Day                           by Jiya U

Red nose day is a really fun day because you get to buy red noses.

Well it is also to help the charity help poor people live their lives peacefully.

There are so many people that need money and some people are making homes for homeless people.

That’s why some school children bring in money and then the school gives the money to charity.

Every year charity raises a lot of money and red noses can be bought for £1.00.

Some shops sell red noses for a pound as well and it is so fun!

You can do so many things on red nose day!

Enjoy!

Red Nose Day

By Ioana P

Red Nose Day is a day where schools help raise money for charity for those who are poor and need to live a happy life.

That also means to buy red noses, you’re giving money for charity.

You can do lots of things by celebrating Red Nose Day; have a onesie day, a cake sale, non-uniform day. You can even be funny.

Schools raise over £500 every year for charity. Your school needs to raise that many pounds.

Every year on Red Nose Day, charity gets the amount of money that your school has raised and gave that money to people who want to buy new clothes and food.

Red noses cost £1 each. Every class always wants to buy a red nose. Not only schools but supermarkets like Sainsburys also sell red noses.

The British Empire
by Ioana Pintiliuc

Introduction:

  • The British Empire included all the territories that were ruled by Britain. Under Queen Victoria’s rule, she doubled its size to make it the largest empire in history – it controlled 23% of the world’s surface and 458 million people at its peak. It was described as being the “Empire on which the sun never sets”.

Victorian British Empire

  • Trade with the Empire made Britain rich. The most famous part of the British Empire was the East India Trading Company, which started out as a small business before becoming a very large trading company in Asia that many people depended on. It mainly traded in: cotton, silk, indigo dye and tea. Tea was its most successful import into Britain where it became a popular drink among the common people during the Victorian period. Queen Victoria was crowned the Empress of India in 1876 when the company disbanded (closed down).
  • The strength of the British Empire was underpinned by the steamship and the telegraph – new technologies invented during Queen Victoria’s reign. On 7th November 1869, the new Suez Canal opened a direct link between the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean to make the voyage between India and Britain much quicker. The SS Great Britain was a large steamship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel which broke the record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, doing it in just 14 days ( 2 weeks.) In 1870, Portcurno, in the far west of Cornwall, became the hub for international cable communications. Its first link stretched from the UK to India.
  • During the 1880s, Britain took control of large parts of Africa, including: Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria and Egypt. This became known as the ‘scramble for Africa’ as Britain competed with other Empire builders, especially France and Belgium, to colonize countries.
  • Some families emigrated from Britain to new homes in countries of the Empire, in particular: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada.
  • Children were taught about the British Empire in school and could easily find the countries of the Empire on a map as they were always coloured in pink or red.
  • Despite being considered in 1897, it wasn’t until the year following Queen Victoria’s death that the first annual Empire Day was held for people to celebrate being proud to be part of such a large, powerful grouping of nations.
  • Many people celebrated Queen Victoria for reigning for 64 years. She was said to be the best queen, best empress of India and she ruled the biggest empire.
  • There is no more British Empire but people still remember it to this day.
  • The British Empire was a great power. It contained territories owned by the United Kingdom. The empire was the largest empire in history. At its peak, it controlled 23% of the world’s surface. More than 458 million people were brought under the control of the British Empire. It was known as the largest colonial empire in history. (Some people think the Mongol Empire was larger). Today, most of its members are in the Commonwealth of Nations. The most famous part of the British Empire was the East India Trading Company. That company started as a small business before becoming a very large trading company which many people depended on. Britain was the most powerful country in the world at this time.

BULLYING  By Ioana

INTRODUCTION:

Many children in the UK are bullied for many different reasons. It may be that someone is judging you, teasing you; all sorts of different things. It can also result being threatened or beaten by a child, enemy or someone who’s just playing.

THREE TYPES:

The three types of bullying are:

  • Bullying as in judging, teasing or being fought
  • Cyberbullying
  • And face-to-face

REPORTING A PROBLEM:

If you have a problem with someone who’s bullying you, please speak to an adult or a teacher, it really helps to share.

Moving Schools by Ioana

PRIMARY: It’s your first day at school. Yay!!! But… not all children think that “ Yay!!!” is an impression for your first day at school. Mostly, some children are nervous or shy, including anxious. Sometimes, school may affect children on their behaviour, attitude or even their smile.

SECONDARY: It’s your first day in Year 7 and you are excited. Wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some children feel exactly the same as when it was their first day at primary school. Some children feel bullied, embarrassed and even ugly.

END: So, we’ve all learnt about how we feel on our first day at school. So, whatever school you’re in, just smile and be yourself. See you next time! Bye!!!

Ottoline and the Yellow Cat

by Ioana

In Literacy, we’ve been reading about Ottoline and the Yellow Cat by Chris Riddell.

We’ve been reading the book and discussing about what emotions, feelings and actions are caused and made in this book.

Every Year 3 class is learning about Ottoline and the Yellow Cat and, hopefully, everyone in Year 3 is enjoying the book so far.

The book has won a “ Nestle Children’s Book Prize… GOLD Award.”

I can’t wait to read some more!!!

Roald Dahl is a very famous children’s author and I truly mean it .

You might have seen other authors that are as good as him but Roald Dahl but my opinion is that he is the best author.  by Jiya

Harrow Film Awards By Ioana Class: 3GT

Introduction: Last week, on Thursday, I went to the Harrow Film Awards. I brought my mum, brother, my cousins, Alex and Seby. They came with their mum, my auntie. At first, we were outside waiting for Mrs Thomas to come. It took ages. But… at least she found us!!

When we went inside, there was a man at the door. He was holding something that looked like a credit card money transferer.

He beeped us with it and counted how many people there were in our family group ( including Mrs Thomas).

Lights, Camera… Action! It was time for the Film Awards. Everyone sat and faced the front… ( some adults were still talking) but.. Then someone began talking and they carried on. Now… it was time!!! First it was, Foundation, then Key Stage 1 Lower then Key Stage 1 Upper.

Now… for the Animation Awards!!!

After that, It was Key Stage 2. Firstly, Lower… then Upper!

The Problems… for me!!!

The main problems for me were:

  • They forgot about me and my film!!
  • They forgot to arrange my lovely certificate

But.. they are posting my certificate!!!

They did show my film in the end.

There will be one next year too.
